Therefore as this is not part of today’s
questions and answers could I please ask
if you foresee you as a company being
the market leaders within this arena.
Were as you Supermicro will strive to
bring the green issue to the front, we
will show the other companies out there
how to do this. Do you see this as
being one of Supermicro's primary goals?
Ah yes we try to do something for
the earth .........That’s why in the
last 3 years we have been continuing to
push the green product to the market.
And also to push our competitors to go
for green together and indeed yes its a
good feeling to do something like this
and when everyone goes in the same
direction it will help contribute to the
earth more. With our products it is
good and with other green products its
even better. And with the competition
today it will help technology to improve
and go faster, so its very good for
feeling for me and the company to
promote this concept.
Therefore since chassis & rack hardware
is a major deployment tool of Supermicro
is more focus on development to chassis
air flow to encapsulate full rack
deployment with intra cab air flow and
thermal management and just not on the
singular insular chassis that is the
current vogue design.
The rack is an important point that we
are covering now. We have a team
designing the next generation rack.
So *very* soon you will see our next
generation. A whole brand new concept
and our goal is to optimize the rack for
easy maintenance and improve thermal
efficiency whilst reducing power
consumption required for cooling down
the whole system within the data
centre. So as I mentioned at the start
of this question we do have a dedicated
team working in this area round the
clock.
It really is an important issue today
the green issue and this is a key focus
area data centers.
We start off from board level, system
level, rack level and then the whole
data center,including
possibly even water cooling in the
future - who knows what next.
Ah but should we be looking at using
fresh water as this is now becoming a
scarce commodity should we not be
looking at saving this precious
resource. So water may be used more
successfully in other places where it is
needed.
AH Ha we can use water from the ocean.
It has to be fairly said that on
entering any data centre, of what is to
be seen are clusters filled with
Supermicro server storage segments.
Would it be fair to say that a figure of
approximately 75% in these centers is
accurate and how will this impact on
future product development.
Our market share will continue to grow
in this area. We have exceptional
products we help customers save money
with better performance, eco friendly
systems that help the earth. Therefore
it's our enthusiasm and directive to
grown this market share area as quick
as we can. Very soon we expect we will
be a major player in this area. We are
already a major player in this area as a
company with a very large market share.
The forthcoming new SPECviewperf
benchmark is going to have a huge impact
on all workstations as much
collaboration with the EPA has gone into
this, how do you as a company foresee
Supermicro workstations rating within
this new benchmark. Though we do have
to carefully consider the professional
graphic cards which go into your
workstation mainboards and each one of
them will have a significant impact on
the scoring.
AH yes our new GPU optimised platforms
1U, 2U, 4U, and tower. They will
provide significant cooling for the data
and the add-on GPU or graphics card
within this high efficiency
environment. This includes the CPU
memory hard drive and add-on cards. Our
systems are ultra efficient in this area
and I believe they will be able to push
the performance scores to the
maximum. We should provide you with
one of our new platforms very soon with
this new ultra efficient system.
Talking of professional graphic cards,
Intel has Larrabee
on the horizon firstly it is predicated
at being a multimedia part. But
rumours are that Larrabee will be a
force to be reasoned with within the
professional graphics arena when it
matures. Taking into consideration
your exceptional engineering background,
how do you personally foresee this
dawning new era.
Our engineers will be working closely
with Intel on these projects, but
personally I didn't get involved in
these areas yet. But with our long term
relationship and collaboration with
Intel I believe will have some sort of
early designed product very soon and it
will be optimised at the system level
rather than at card level or graphics
sub-system level.
Our
solution will be Systems level optimised
including system performance per watt,
noise level control and boosted
performance for sure.
The current change in AMD's strategies
have caused and called many worries in
certain houses. How do you as a company
foresee AMD's new found alliances? Will
this have an impact on Supermicro and
how it will present its current and
future product lines?
I personally believe AMD will continue
to survive and grow as a partner. I
believe we will keep all of our AMD and
Intel product lines for quite some time.
You support both ATI and NVIDIA's
products on your mainboards, which we
have to say is kudos were it is deserved
as this gives the customer an
unprecedented choice, especially on
Tylersburg were customers had the choice
of both Crossfire and SLI. Though on the
server front mostly ATI chipsets are
found on server boards, why not any from
NVIDIA.
Actually we now use lots of Winbond IP
microchip and they have a graphics chip
built in. So we now started to use lots
of Winbond graphics viewing chips. This
chip is the best for our customers for
the server market. So for example most
of our Nehalem server board products
contain the Winbond IPM graphic chip
solution
When I ask this question there are many
interesting responses from the
individuals; where do you foresee the
company being positioned within the next
five years and do you think that growth
within Supermicro will be reflective of
the work you and your team have laid out
in your long term strategies.
Yes, Supermicro has been a consistently
growing company and during the last 15
years we have been doing so ever year
with no exceptions. More importantly,
we have been profitable while doing so.
A very consistent growth and I hope in
future we can grow even faster.
Certain forecasting from other sources
see a slowdown in market sales and a
shift in market share within
workstations and servers, are they wrong
to surmise this?
I believe this poor economic climate
everyone will be watching their budgets
more carefully. But while doing so,
they are looking for products more
carefully. With Supermicro, the
products are very strong and these
changing times we will continue to grow
our market share. Companies and people
will evaluate products more carefully
and with us having exceptional products
I consider this is a chance for us to
grow our market share. |
