Scorpio Blue 750GB Mobile Hard Drive

Conclusions and Award

The Western Digital Catch Phrase -" And The Brand Goes On".  Yes indeed and just keeps getting bigger at this level, who would have ever thought a year ago we would be seeing 2 1/2" Drives that had a 750GB capacity - actually 1TB in this range.   A significant engineering advancement .   The pointed question is what next in the 2 1/2" range and at what spindle speed will we see.  The mind most certainly boggles at the feats Western Digital surpass themselves.

This brings into question the physical size of hard discs.  With drives now at 1TB in the  2 1/2" range how long before we see the 2TB mark being reached, and, with drives reaching these capacities how long before we see the demise of the 3 1/2" drive.
Severe thoughts here must be dually taken into consideration and analysts alike must be thinking down these same routes.  What also must be taken into serious deliberation is that we also see a EIDE  variant of this drive, therefore once more another use can be found for these very large, quiet drives in older systems or even a desktop looking for a quick quiet mass storage upgrade.

For an early sample we have seen within some very good results indeed and when you also take into account the Cost/GB ratio of £99 UKP or approx $150 USD (Ex Taxes and Delivery) then this is a bargain in miniature mass storage.    As for its size well for those thinking of inserting it into your notebook, WD do quote that you should ensure that your notebook can take this size of drive.    Looking at competitors, well there are some interesting pieces about but no-one comes within reach of Western Digital's offering.  SSD's, well currently they still are somewhat of a premium yet and an average  128GB SSD is at least double the cost of the 750GB Western Digital.
We took our trusty MSI 17" beast and low and behold in it went admitably with not much room to spare.  When the drive lid was closed fully we could see only a few mm clearance left.  Though it nicely fitted in, therefore it can in some instances work perfectly well in notebooks.    Performance within the notebook was very good indeed and Vista loaded in within the usual tolerances of a full install of Ultimate.  Acoustics' once the installation had been completed we left the unit shut down for a good 2 hours and then rebooted it - silence is golden.  Surprising enough it was very quiet indeed considering we have removed a WD Blue 500GB drive.  Therefore the upgraded logic held within the drive have made vast improvements over its predecessor.

The actual tests we completed covered the drive as a supporting back-up disc which we foresee many using the drive for.  The synthetic tests returned some very interesting results indeed and these tied in with Western Digital's claims.  So kudos here.  The real world file transfer tests and the back-up test certainly pushed the drive and as was seen within some very reasonable results which can be seen on some 3  1/2" 7200rpm discs.  All things considered for a 5200rpm 2 1/2" drive with only 8MB cache its a pretty sound piece of engineering that will keep many an individual happy for a very long time to come.

The question on everyone's lips are we going to see 7200rpm drives of this stature and volume.   Time undoubtedly will tell as we are constantly kept on our toes with what comes firing out the pedigree stable door  at Western Digital.  Therefore for now we must be very patient indeed.
