Conclusions and Award

This most certainly is a winning solution Supermicro have put together and it is no wonder so many customers come to them for this superb solution.  Easy to set up and running and the open-e software package might seem daunting to some, though this is easily worked around by a visit from your local representative.  To the main, they will have no troubles at all getting this package all up and running within 30 minutes from unpacking the box to having it connected up to the network.  From the pictures displayed throughout you finally get the feel for the quality of the product that is finally delivered.

The supplied open-e software has so many utilities and functionality we took out some of the more basic so that the end-user had some form of idea just how much is contained within the package.  Upgrading the package (if already not in place) is very simplistic indeed with the aid of a flash disc.  It cannot get any simpler.  Though homework for the first-time users will be needed to grasp open-e software fullest potential.   Witnessed within it is the Administrators dream package with all the worldly goodies bundled together,

Many will have yelped - what no I/Ops but we deliberately aimed this outing at the first time user.  The experienced will know the full in's and out's of what Supermicro has to offer though and what the actual TX rates actually are - load dependant of course.   We hope that some message will have been taken away with the actual throughput of data TX that can be readily achieved.   Many ask just how long it takes to back up X GB's  amounts of packages from various systems.  Hopefully today we have made this clear to them demonstrating a message of cost effectiveness and simplicity.  But also showing the "need for speed" within this complex environment, though within the same sentence we must take into account Supermicro's thought for the green solution maintaining their strive in good economic cost per dollar/euro per unit depending on where you are.

There are many suppliers of 2u storage solutions, and many think cheap is effective.  Not so.  Vast experience has shown this to be a poor choice.   Therefore when planning for major inclusions of this nature within the IT budget it is wise to price things around covering the major concepts of "what if" within your risk analysis of the task.  Pricing as we highlighted earlier is very competitive and good for what you get.  So think on when nearing the final stages of making that all important purchase.

Penultimately we look back at what has been supplied and to what cost.  This is a solid robust 2U storage unit that will sit nicely in the rack whirring away nicely until a major hardware update/scheduled maintenance period  is required to shut it down.   Supermicro have maintained their "green" policy which in turn means cost per dollar, per unit is very good.  Taking into account today's premiums that are incurred on power hungry storage devices then this ultimately fits the bill very simplistically.    To reiterate, fast is good but fast at a fraction of the cost of other units out there - it is even better.

Finally, we have no complaints this unit has now been functional for a few months now.  You almost get the feel it keeps wanting more to play with as we throw at it huge amounts of data both on and off daily.   This Goliath of the 2U storage is most certainly what the discerning IT users require.  Easy to install and set-up, and fast with the final delivery across the whole required network.  In the end it cannot get any easier than this from Supermicro - or can they.   On this note we will have to wait for the turn of the year and see what is hidden up the sleeve.
