Western Digitals ShareSpace

The ShareSpace comes within a neat secure box that is well padded out to protect the item within shipping.  Once you get the ShareSpace out of the main packaging its size and weight will surprise many (4TB model that is) as it’s not as large and heavy as the initial photographs would make you think.

Package Contents

Network storage system with RAID (populated with 2 or 4 hard drives)

1 X Ethernet cable
2 X hard drive mounting rails (for 2-drive models) AC adapter
1 X Software CD
1 X Quick Install Guide

All standard to what you would expect from a piece of hardware of this magnitude.  Before we delve into the actual workings and tests of the ShareSpace we firstly though take a look into the ease of; and heavens forbid a drive failure.    A warning light springs into gear on the ShareSpace telling what drive has failed.

The ShareSpace strips down very readily with the removal of two thumbscrews at the back.  The cover plate slides off and reveals all.

The drives are held in place with a simple dampening mount and a swift tug and out pops the drive.

The dampening guide easily pops off and switch out the drive and push it back in.  You know when the drive is securely in place as a resounding click is to be heard.  Once complete - rebuild the array.   Remember it takes a considerable amount of time to rebuild a 1TB Hard Drive back into a Raid 5 array.  So this is an operation that should be started and left alone to rebuild before going home at night.    In the morning, give or take a few hours it will be ready for you to commence with where you left of.
